In a world filled with rapid change and advancement, sometimes it takes a personal experience to drive innovation. For me, Karen Nelson, the founder of Wiserr, this journey began with the close-knit bonds of a five-generation family and a profound realisation about the state of elderly care services.
Our family had always been a pillar of strength, and we prided ourselves on caring for one another. With five generations of strong women, we had learned the value of compassion, support, and unwavering dedication. Little did I know that these values would soon shape the course of my life and lead to the creation of Wiserr.
In the tumultuous year of 2020, our family faced a heart-wrenching loss when we suddenly lost my mother at the young age of 64. While we were grappling with grief, we were also faced with the responsibility of caring for my beloved Grandma, who was suffering from Mixed Dementia. Her condition was further complicated when she suffered a debilitating fall, resulting in a broken hip and total loss of mobility.
As a family, we recognised the need for specialised care and assistance. This was uncharted territory for us, and we turned to various agencies for guidance on finding the right care home for Grandma. However, what we encountered was disheartening.
We felt like mere numbers in a system that didn’t understand the depth of our love and concern for Grandma. Recommendations were made without truly considering her individual needs and desires. It was as if decisions about her future were being made for us, and we knew in our hearts that these decisions wouldn’t honour her wishes.

We were the ones who had shared a lifetime of memories, laughter, and love with her. It was crystal clear that only our family could make the decision that would genuinely reflect what Grandma would have wanted.
Determined to find the best possible care for Grandma, we embarked on visits to numerous care homes. It was during this search that we stumbled upon a place that hadn’t been recommended to us by any agency. What set this particular care home apart was the way the staff interacted with Grandma. Their genuine warmth, patience, and empathy spoke volumes. It was evident that they saw beyond her condition and recognised her as the unique individual she was.
This experience ignited a spark within me. I realised that there had to be a better way to connect families with care services. No family should feel like they’re just another statistic in the system, and no elderly individual should have decisions made for them without considering their personal preferences.
And so, Wiserr was born from a place of love, empathy, and a commitment to making the journey of finding care services more compassionate and family-centered. We believe that every elderly individual deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity and respect. Our platform empowers families to make informed choices, just as we did for Grandma, ensuring that their loved ones receive the care and attention they truly deserve.
In memory of my mother and in honour of Grandma, we are dedicated to Wiserr. We understand that family is at the heart of every decision, and our mission is to make that journey a little easier, a lot more personal, and filled with genuine care.
