Home Care Funding – Who covers the cost?

If you’re considering Home Care for yourself, a loved one or a friend it can be a stressful process particularly when considering who will be covering the cost. However, our guide is here to ease that stress and point you in the right direction when seeking options for Home Care funding.

Home Care funding can be expensive and finding out who will have to pay for these fees can be quite frightening. Depending on the circumstances there is support available so it’s important to explore all the options best for you and your loved ones.

Here are some common types of Home Care funding:

Local Council

If you require homecare and are eligible for it, your local council will conduct a means test to determine how much, if any, you will have to pay for the care. The test will take into account your income and savings, but not the value of your property. The amount you pay will depend on your capital:

Those with over £23,250 paying the full cost themselves

Those between £14,250 and £23,250 paying a contribution based on their income and a tariff income calculated by the council

Those with less than £14,250 receiving financial support from the council and only contributing from their income.

Government Funding

It’s important to ensure you are receiving all the benefits you are eligible for. Some of these include;

Attendance Allowance – Intended for people over State Pension age who require addition support to maintain their independence due to an illness or disability.

Personal Independent Payment – If you are under State Pension age.

Carer’s Allowance – If you have a carer they may be eligible for Carer’s Allowance.

These benefits are not based on means-testing, meaning they are not affected by your income and savings.

Personal Funds

Some individuals may choose to pay for home care services directly themselves, especially if they do not qualify for any council funding.

Private Insurance

Some health insurance plans may cover some Home Care funding. It’s essential to contact the provider to understand the policy details.

Family Support

In some cases family members may cover the cost or contribute to Home Care.
